Hi my name is Jessie. I love to play sports, snowboard, draw and especially read. I like all sorts of books like mystery and adventure. Some of my favorite books are Shift, Diamond Willow and a classic Where the Red Fern Grows. My goal for the year is to read at least ten DCF`s. When ever I read I always pull out good vocabulary words and memorize how to spell them, try spelling abolitionism. Whenever I read i always think (example a fiction book)of what are the possibilities of the problem in the book happening to me. you should think about it. I hope you liked hearing about me and remember to check out some of my book summary`s below.
2oo9-2010
Shift DCF
This summer I read the book Shift by Jennifor Bradbury. Shift is about two friends (Chris and Win) going on a bicycle trek across the country starting at their home in West Virginia and planning to reach the west coast but in the middle of there journey Chris finds one hundred dollar bills in rolls the size of a softball in Wins bag. Chris thinks how did Win get all this money? Plus why does Win need it? Win does need it when he leaves Chris behind while he was fixing a flat tire at the end of there journey. After Win leaves Chris,Chris decides to go finish what they started and go to the west coast without Win. After all this happened Chris gets involved with the FBI and he is told to go out and try to go and find him. Chris finds Win at a house they stopped on there bicycle journey. I think this is a great book for people who like mysterys and adventure.
The Gollywhopper Games DCF
In the book The Golly Whopper Games by Jody Feldman,Gil is tempted to win the Golly Whopper Games which are games that you have to figure out to be able to move on to the next level. Every round somebody gets out of the games. Gil has made it to the top five people of having a shot at winning a hundred thousand dollars. He`s met friends that have helped him all the way and now he has to plat aganist them in order win. I like this book because you can try to figure out the problems yourself and that it keeps you turning pages. When I was reading the book I was some times was rooting for another character in the book besides Gil. .
Harry Potter and The Sorcerers Stone
I just finished Harry Potter And The Sorcerers Stone by J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter is a wizard taking after his parents who died by a sorcerer- lord Voldemort. He tried to kill Harry but he could not. All that is left is scar on his forhead. Harry is stuck with his cousin Dudly, his aunt Petunia and his uncle Vernon. Harry then gets an invitation to Hogwarts school for wizards. when he got to the train he met Ron Weasley and his family and he met Hermonie Granger. When they get there they learn about the Sorcerers Stone they then learn where it is hidden-under the school. They take a trip under the school in search of the sorcerers stone. There fun comes to an end when Harry meets who killed his parents-Voldemort. Harry fights off Voldemort, not with magic but with his own hands. I like this book because there is a lot of action that will make you keep you turning pages. I like books that have a big mystery and then there are little mysterys that lead up to the big one.
Greetings From Nowhere DCF
I recently finished Greetings From Nowhere by Barbara O`Connor. Aggie is the owner of the Sleepy Time motel in the great Smoky Mountains. Business has slowed down since Harold died so Aggie can`t keep up with all the work by herself. She puts an ad up saying that the Sleepy Time motel is for sale. Aggie isn`t alone when Kirby, Lorretta and Willow come to stay. Kirby is a boy that gets in trouble whenever he wants attention so his mother is taking him to a special school for boys. Aggie meets him when his mother's car breaks down. Lorretta is a girl that is a adopted and her mother left a charm bracelet so Lorretta goes to the places that are on the charm bracelet and one happens to be the Smokey Mountains. Willow and her father are taking the motel over. Willow has a mother,Dorothy who lives in Savannah with her sister. Aggie has to move out until Willow asks her to stay to help her father so she does. I really like this book because it goes to one character's feelings then to another. The character Willow reminds me of Willow in the book Diamond Willow. Willow is a lot like Willow because they are both shy and they keep to their selfs.
The Hunger Games DCF
The Hunger Games DCF I just finished The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. There are twelve districts in Panem. Every year the annual Hunger Games picks a boy and a girl from each district to go and fight to death on TV. Katniss lives in the 12th district with her mom and her sister Prim. Prim gets picked to go to the Hunger Games but Katniss volunteers to go for her. Peeta is the boy that is going to the Hunger Games with Katniss from their district. Katniss meets Rue from district 11 in training. Once they all get in the arena Peeta and Katniss go their diffrent ways,Katniss pairs up with Rue to help each other. When Katniss returns from getting supplies she finds Rue almost dead, after a song that Katniss sings Rue dies. before the song Katniss kills the person that killed Rue. After all that happened Katniss finds Peeta who has a nasty leg injury and she has to help him get stronger every once in a while something comes to help Katniss with Peeta. This book is a serious page turner. This book goes from romance to sleeping in a cave. I like this book because I like hearing Katniss`s thoughts and all the details you can see what`s happening.
Knucklehead DCF
Knucklehead is a book about John Scieszka (the author) growing up in Flint Michigan. John had five brothers Jim,Tom,Gregg,Brian and Jeff. Their father was a school principal so when anything got out of control at home he would handle it. Their mother was registered nurse (RN) sowhen anybody got a cut or a broken collarbone she knew what to do. John and his brothers went to Catholic school from first grade to ninth. Him,Jim and Tom did the boys choir at their school, almost every boy in their class joined because everyone loved the teacher(sister Mary Katherine). John and Jim loved making model airplanes. One day they thought just flying them around is boring so they took a plastic bag and lit it on fire and dripped hot plastic on the airplanes and they made a zipping and whizzing sound. That is how the black smoke spots on the basement ceiling came from. The kids loved going to their grandparents house because they lived by a lake so they pretended to be widerness explores. There is so much more crazy things Jon and his brothers did while growing up. I had a connection to this book because my mom is a RN (registered nurse) and I love going out in the woods and playing.
Diamond Willow DCF
Diamond Willow by Helen Frost is about a girl named Willow she doesn't think a lot about what she is good at and what is good about her. She lives with her mom, dad, sister (suzanne),and her dogs in Alaska. Out of all of the other dogs she has her favorite,Roxy an Alaskan malamute. One day she begs her parents to let her go to her grandparents with the dogs alone. Her parents finally let her. On the way back Roxy is blinded (as though they think) by a branch that was on the trail. Willow does all she can to save Roxy from being put down. She and her friend,Kalie try to bring Roxy to her grandparents house to keep her there so she doesn't get put down. All is going well until the take the wrong turn on a trail and end up at a place where secrets are hidden in her past. Once gets back home from getting lost her family tells her that she had another person in her family that Willow never suspected. One day she finds something that no one else knows except Willow and Roxy. This book has a lot of secrets that keep popping up everywhere. I really liked this book because when you really read it the words are in shapes of diamonds and in the end Willow finds her own good side that she never thought about.I would desribe the book as a jigsaw puzzle, putting all the pieces together.
The Leanin` Dog DCF
The Leanin` Dog by K.A. Nuzum is about a girl named Dessa Dean that lives out in the woods with her father. The past year her mother died outside in the cold. She will not step of her porch or else she gets daymares (nightmares but in the day)about her mother dying. One day there came a scratching at the door she opened the door and there was a big brown lump on the porch it was a dog. The dog got up and walked away. The rest of the day Dessa Dean called for that dog. One day a scratching came from the door and the dog was there again this time it didn`t run awy from her. Dessa Dean let the dog come into the house. When Dessa Dean`s father came home from hunting the dog started barking like crazy. "She was protecting me". Dessa Dean said to her father. After a while her father believed her and said "when the dog comes around you can keep her if you like". The rest of the week DEssa Dean kept hollering out the door for the dog. Finally the dog came and stayed. The day of christmas there was a horrible diaster and the dog had to save it`s best feiend. I loved this book if you are a dog lover you`d love this book of true friendship.
Savvy DCF
Savvy by Ingrid will keep you turning pages. This book is about is about the Beumont family. This family gets savvies. A savvy is a special power when you turn into a teenager very rarely younger than that. Mississippi Beumont (Mibs for short) is turning thirteen very soon and she is wondering what her savvy is going to be. Her brother Fish got his savvy just about a year ago. His savvy is making a rain storm, hurricane stuff like that. Her older brother Rocket has a lightining savvy. The day before Mibs birthday her father gets into a terrible car accident and is in a coma. Mibs feels terrible that her brother Rocket and her parents aren`t going to be there to celebrate her special birthday. The morning of her birthday something strange happens and she believes that she can wake up her father if she gets to the hospital in time. She,her little brother Samson,Fish, friend Will junior and his sister bobby go on a journey that they will never forget. I think Ingrid Laws savvy is writing amazing books that all ages will enjoy.

Double Eagle DCF
Imagine finding a multi million dollar coin on a vacation. The down side is to try not to tell anybody about the coin or get into any trouble for trespassing on historical grounds. Michael`s parents are divorced and he doen`t like it at all. One lives in California and the other lives in Alabama. This summer Michael is going to see his dad. He has no idea that he is going to add a coin to his collection and make him a millionare and he doesn`t know that a nasty hurricane might kill him and his dad. It is a race against time. Should he let the treasure go or save his life. He also doesn`t know that a friend is all you need have to find treasure and friendship. I think this book is not only about adventure but drama. Michael is very brave to be out on the gulf coast in 70mph winds. This book was a nasty page turner and that`s what I like about books. I think Sneed B. Collard III (the author) has a chance of winning the DCF competition.
Franny Parker DCF
The blue pickup truck comes rolling into the driveway. A women opens the truck door and walks into the house. Behind her a boy about my age follows. This is just the beginning. Franny Parker, average sized, brown haired and loving. Franny and her family live in Oklahoma. Not much goes on around the small town, until the driest most hottest summer comes around. There is no rain or crops many farms had to shut down because of it. But that isn`t the big thing. Franny has new neighbors. They seem nice, but somethings wrong and Franny is going to find out. This book is about helping other people and animals. This is adventure, sadness, comedy and a little romance type of book. People that like even one of those things, I would recommend this book.
Slob DCF
Owen Birnbaum is the fattest kid in school. Everybody knows that. He has a really rough time at school. His gym teacher, Mr.Wooly is always giving him a hard time. Owen can't even do a somersault so Mr. Wooly gets out a leash ties around Owen and pulls on the leash and he does a somersault. By the end of gym class he is flopping all over the floor while the rest of the kids are laughing at him. I honestly felt bad for him. Besides being fat he is genius and doesn't have any parents, they were killed two years ago (he now lives with a foster mom) . He is trying to set up a time machine to find out who killed his parents two long years ago. It is long and a lot of hard work. Read the book to find out if Owen finds the killer of his parents. I liked this book because several different things are going on at the same time it's kind of hard to follow but it was good and exciting every page.
Faith, Hope, and Ivy June DCF
Ivy June Mosely lives up in the hills of Kentucky where theres no cell service, no TV, no computer, and no bathroom. Catherine Combs lives in the city in Kentucky where theres all of that stuff and more. For two weeks Ivy June is going to live with Catherine and see many things that are new that her and her family don't get where they live. Then Catherine is coming to stay with Ivy June for two weeks and find out the hard way of living, but as mammaw Mosley says trouble comes in threes. Number one, Ivy June's great grandma has something wrong with her foot and is in pain. Number two, Catherines mom is in the hospital and doesn`t want Catherine coming home until she's better. Number Three Ivy June's grandpa works in a mine. Every day she thinks about him. Until one day at school when something goes wrong in the mine Ivy June is just thinking about her granpa coming out of that mine alive. Remember when I said most of the differences about Ivy June and Catherine? Well turns out in the end they are more alike than different.
11 birthdays DCF
can you imagine having your birthday at least seven days? Would this be a good thing?
Well you might think so but if you ask Amanda Ellerby in 11 Birthdays she would say it was horrible having your birthday more than once in a year. Amanda and Leo knew eachother from the day they were born. They also had there birthdays together until the tenth birthday. Leo said something that he shouldn't have. Amanda hasn`t spoke to him in a year until their 11th birthday when weird things start to happen. They both have their birthday over and over again. It is their job to find out how to actually get to the weekend. By the end Leo and Amanda are finally friends again.

jessie- great start. Your first book review for "Shift" starts out really good-- you just need to talk a little about the resolution of the book. What happens with the character's questions about the money? In your personal introduction you could also add a few more details about yourself besides just your reading interests and goals. You are off to a great start and I am SURE you will definitely get 5 DCFs read this year! You have my permission to do some format changes (ex: color, text). You can also add a picture. I will show the group how to do that tomorrow in library class.
