How's it going everyone! Hi, my name is Meghan and welcome to my wiki page! I am a student in Newfane, VT and I love to read Harry Potter, email my friends (even if I'm not always loyal about it), draw, and play soccer. I hope to read around 30 books this year and that my reviews will help people make good reading choices. This year I hope will be fun for me and all my friends using this awesome site. Thank you!
**the DCF means that it is a Dorothy Canfield Fisher book.**
Please feel free to comment.
DCF
I read Antsy does time by Neal Shusterman ( I think!) and I think it rocks! It's about this kid named Antsy who meets weird kids (ever read the Schwa was here ?). This time he meets a kid who claims he has a deadly disease where your body turns oxygen into carbon monoxide. Apparently he only has 6 weeks to live. Pitying this weird kid, Antsy "donates" a month of his life to him. Soon the whole town is giving him months of their life, totaling 50 years. I recommend this book to anyone who feels they could use a good laugh, or a lesson in good attention-seeking.
DCF
Over the summer I read The Cabinet of Wonders by Marie Rutnoski. In the small town of Okno lives Petra Kronos and her unusual father, Mikal Kronos. Mikal Kronos can move metal with his eyes. Using his magical skill, he runs a store full of pets and other awesome things (don't you wish you could?). Now the evil Prince Rodolfo wants him to create a powerful clock witholding astonishing beauty. One piece is left to be installed but before that can happen, the prince steals his eyes (oh no!), arriving home covered in bloody bandages. Horrified by her fathers apparel, Petra sets off for the city of Prague to take back her fathers eyes (yah Petra!).
DCF
I recently finished the bookThe Calder Game by Blue Balliett. It is based on a real life artist, named Alexander Calder who was a sculpture from 18-something to 1947 or around that time and is also considered to have created the mobile. The story starts when a boy named Calder (go figure) goes on a class trip to the art museum to see a limited time exhibit featuring a bunch of Calders work. Escaping the tight knot of people, Calder finds himself in a room filled with paper with mobiles on it, saying play the Calder game and make your own mobile. The next day Calder is offered to go with his father to Woodstock, England. Of course he goes, who wouldn't? Once there, he finds the Minotaur, one of Calders sculptures in the town square. Strange thing is nobody seems to like it. Then, two calders go missing. One is a boy and the other is a statue. The police are baffled and their only clues are the words wish-wish grafittied on the cobblestone. This is a really awesome mystery that requires a lot of logic and brain power for the reader to solve.

This book is definately on my top five for you to read. This super duper awesome book is Savvy by Ingrid Law (luv you!!) Ever imagine having your own power that comes to you like clock work? Well the Beaumounts do, lucky. Even luckier is that Mibs is about to hit it off. It is the day before Mibs thirteenth birthday and she is about to get her own special power, or savvy as they call it. With a brother who creates lightning and another sibling who starts hurricanes when he's mad, no wonder Mibs can't wait! Unlucky for her though is that her father gets into a super awful car crash that sends Mibs, her brother Fish, and friends Will Junior and his cranky teen sister Bobby, chasing all over Kansas on a pink bible school bus trying to get to Selena where her father lays in the hospital. Along the way Mibs is crushed by her new savvy and heartwarmed with the new friends she makes.
DCF
I just finished the most amazing book in the world(well maybe not) but it was definately the best DCF I have read this year! The Other Side of the Island by Allegra Goodman is a futuristic sci-fi-ish kinda book. Well, I have no idea. The point is this: Imagine that you are living under a roof with projected weather and skies the color of the Crayola sky blue crayon every day? Pretty weird. Every unpredicted storm is like a total blow out. Or, you know the f-word and how it's like the worst swear, their "f-word" is 'Forcaster', one who is against Earth Mother, the safety of the Islands, and the Weather Station. It is the eighteenth glorious year of Enclosure, and taken away from their home in the north islands is Honor Greenspoon and her family. When Honor is chosen to go to a really high education school, her parents are relieved. Soon Honor notices that her family isn't normal, singing songs, and having an illegal second child. Worried that her family will be taken (meaning disappearing or dead), Honor makes some pretty dumb decisions that puts her family in jeopardy of the orderlies. Along with her friend Helix, Honor learns a really creepy truth about her island and where her parents went. I think this book will make you seriously love not knowing what our future could turn out to be. It would be like slavery all over again, plus a lot more lying.
DCF
If you ever get to read this book you will love, love, love it. The Gollywhopper Games by Jody Feldman is the book that will have you dreaming of fame, fortune, and ultimate happiness. That is exactly what Gil Goodson is thinking. He is thinking, get me out of the town filled with teasing and bad memories. For that he needs money, and a lot of it. The Gollywhopper Games is Gils only chance to win enough money. But like any other person, the whole town is out for the same dream. So Gil gets lucky and makes it past the first round of elimination, the next day is, teamwork? Gil's not sure this is what he bargained for. Racing against the clock (and a really smart 14 year old who dresses like she's 4) to win.
DCF
I know that a lot of people will disagree heavily with me saying that I really don't care for this book as much as I probably should. Rapunzels Revenge by Dean and Shannon Hale is a graphic novel (sort of like a long comic book with more words)is a western twist on the classic fairytale. I really like Shannon Hale as an author in general, but this time the whole thing went too far. The story of Rapunzel was changed more than I had expected or would have liked. Other than that, it was okay.
DCF
I do not like fairytales that start with 'once upon a time' and end with 'they lived happily ever after'. Girly. Not that adventurous. Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George prooves all that wrong. It took me days of reading it to realize that the story line was almost exactly the same as Beauty and the Beast. Instead of a prince under the transformation hideous beast, there is a giant polar bear under the spell of the ugly trolls. The no-name daughter of a poor woodcutter to a palace of ice for a year and a day, (classic, never happy in fairytales with just a nice round year) to live in luxury. I will come out and say that this book has everything all fairy tales should be, parts where there may not be a happily ever after, so it seems.
Stargirl. Stargirl. Roll the words again and again in your mouth, just like I read this book, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, over and over because it is so good. A former DCF and winner of Meghan's-favorite-books award, it combines the high school student body and the new kid, the outsider, the she's-not-like-us-er. Leo Borlock soon finds himself falling head-over-heels for the girl who rose and fell like a balloon.
DCF
As a baby, wanted dead. As a child, wanted dead. As a teen, wanted dead. Nobody Owens, nicknamed 'Bod' stars in the spine chilling work of mystical writing, more commonly known as The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Raised in the local graveyard by ghosts and not knowing his whole family had just been murdered by a single blackbone knife, Bod is raised in a world of questions and little answers. Kinda frustrating. Without meaning to, Bod stumbles across the Sleer who guards the treasure waiting for his master to come, Scarlett, the bubbly and spirited five-year-old, and the dreadful city of Ghuleum, where the ghouls scare those who wander. Spooky.
DCF
The Hunger Games. By Suzanne Collins. A total genius. This book may even be better than Harry Potter, which is saying something. Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen, known as 'Catnip' to her friend Gale lives in the brutal future of North America, known as Panem. Living in District 12 is hard work, being the main source of coal for the Capitol, people don't live very long. What is even worse is the annual Hunger Games. Of the twelve districts, a boy and a girl of ages 12 to 18 are selected to go to the Capitol and fight to the death. When the day of the reaping arrives, is praying she won't get picked, she's lucky. What isn't lucky is that her 12 year old sister, Prim, is chosen instead. Not bearing to see Prim die, Katniss voluntarily takes her place. She and the boy tribute Peeta Mellark will go with Haymitch and Effie Trinket ( trainers) to the Capitol. Upon interviews, katniss finds out that peeta has been hopelessly in love with her since, well ever. With this on hand, Katniss scores a perfect 11 out of 12 to impress the Gamemakers (more out of anger with there lack of attention than happiness). In the arena, Katniss struggles to survive through dehydration, starvation and burns. With the Career tributes on her trail (tributes from districts 1, 2, 4, and sometimes 3)she has a lot to worry about. Soon Katniss finds Rue, a fragile and clever 12 year old from District 11, and joins forces with her. Having Rue as an ally really improves things, but not for long. When Rue takes a spear in the stomach and dies, Katniss is left alone. For me this was sooo sad, I almost cried. There has been a new change in plans though, if both tributes from the same district are alive, both can win. At this Katniss searches frantically for Peeta, badly hurt but still alive. Hiding in a cave, there is a lot of romantic moments. As you know, I don't really like romantic stuff, but since there was always the chance of someone dying, I didn't really mind, actually enjoying parts of it. There are only 5 tributes left now, but one is murdered, one eats poisonous berries, and now only Cato remains. A lot of work finishes him off (don't let me spoil the secret!). Since there is a sequel, the characters kinda have to live anyway. THIS BOOK IS AMAZING SO PLEEASE DON'T BE A POOP. READ IT! Thank you for listening to me ramble on and on.
DCF
This book was easily the worst DCF I have read this year. Shooting the Moon by Frances O'Roark Dowell is about Army brats Jamie and her brother, TJ. When TJ is sent to Vietnam as a medic, Jamie is 'plum thrilled' as she says. Expecting exciting letters filled with real life details of war, Jamie is sent film canisters instead. Of course, Jamie develops them only to find a totally different side of Army life. I don't recommend this book unless you love boring books.
DCF
I wish that I had reviewed this book when it was still fresh in my mind. Christo and Jeanne-Claude: through the gates and beyond by Jan Greenberg and Sarah Jordan is about 2 artists who devoted the live to creating monumental sculptures all over the world. Their most famous being the orange gates in Central park New York, N.Y. I thought that this book was okay, just not something I would vote for, though I did enjoy the surrounded islands in Florida.

Hey meghan. wow! You will certainly be my assistant support person for our next wiki class! This looks great. And you are already figuring out how to create links to other pages. Really great technology problem sovling..I love it! The reviews are good...the second one seems a little more "book reportish"-- try injecting some of your own voice and opinions into this one. Here is your next challenge-- figuring out how to insert a picture onto your personal page. If you have time give it a try. It should not be an actual picture of you-- but rather an image that 'symbolizes' you in some way. If you find the image online, please include the EXACT website address under the picture so that you can reference where you are getting your information (images are the same as words!). See my page for an example of this.

meghan. awesome work on the dcf book pages. take a look at the robot dreams page to see how i formatted it last year. instead of the "about the book" section just do a "book review" and an "about the author" section. also, see if you can find an image of the book cover to add to the top of the page for each page. great job, you are already a wiki guru!

Meghan,
hmmmm I actually can't remember how I did that-- it was a long time ago. ANYWAY I am holding off on letting you all do that because ME being the only one to have a picture makes it really easy to see who I have given comments. Maybe we will add this element to the wiki later in the year.

Meghan. You continue to do an amazing job on this. You have a real voice and 'ease' in your writing. Book reviews, while they seem on the surface to be simple, are really very tricky. You need to combine a synopsis and then interject your thoughts, ideas, voice. You really have a great grasp on this! You need to post some of these thoughts on the DCF blog that includes kids from all over the state. Check out the link on the DCF home page. Keep up the great work!
